Organizational Studies

Organizational Studies (OS) is a highly-selective, interdisciplinary program at the University of Michigan based in economics, sociology and psychology. Each discipline contributes a lens through which to view organizations, their structures, and their processes. Students can explore classes in other disciplines--including political science, communications, education or law--in an effort to customize their academics and focus their career interests.

Further, each student in the program is encouraged to construct a "pathway" (see below). The OS pathway is an individually-created describing the student's interest and goals in relation to Organizational Studies, including potential course selections that can help fulfill those goals.

"Strategic and Creative Communication in Organizations"

In an age of instantly accessible information, an organization is subject to shifting complexities in its communication practices. Whether selling a product or expressing a mission, an organization's ability to communicate with purpose has become more important than ever. Furthermore, today's new media afford an increasing number of platforms through which to communicate, including social media, requiring an organization to think more creatively when reaching out to its targeted population.

The intersection of strategy and creativity is one that I wish to study further, particularly in the context of organizational communication. By pursuing degrees in both Organizational Studies and Communication Studies, I hope to engage with these ideas in courses relating to media studies, organizational studies, marketing and writing. These courses will give me both the theoretical and practical tools to design strategic and creative communication ideas and campaigns for organizations.
